Declining Accruals in Detroit:
This news can't wait for summer: Ford and General Motors set aside less in warranty accruals per vehicle sold last year than ever before. Thanks to a well-timed coincidence of rising sales, falling warranty costs, rising reliability, and reduced recalls, the top two passenger car and light truck makers in Detroit are cutting their warranty expenses to just a few hundred dollars per vehicle sold.

Solar Power Equipment Warranties:
First Solar and SunPower have emerged as major warranty providers, building megawatt power plants in the desert. And Tesla Motors, while not solar powered, has emerged as a major warranty provider in the "green" energy industry. They're still not as big as GE or GM, but they're no longer small either.

General Motors' Warranties:
The world's largest automaker is running out of cash, and if a government loan doesn't come through soon, bankruptcy may follow. As the largest U.S.-based warranty provider, GM's fortunes may have a Lehman-like ripple effect throughout the entire manufacturing sector. Then again, maybe a court-supervised opportunity to reorganize is just what the company needs?
