While the huge downturn in GM's auto sales hurt GMAC's service contracts, what forced the finance company to seek a TARP bailout was a really bad bet on home mortgages. Now the government-owned company has become a bank and is pursuing non-GM dealerships.

With GM now government-owned and several mobile home makers trapped in bankruptcy, industry-wide warranty statistics are losing their meaning. And thanks to the distortions caused by massive sales declines this year, claims rates have also lost much of their relevance during this recession. But among at least the well-run warranty providers, accrual rates have remained proportional to sales rates and quality levels.

Of all the companies in the extended warranty business, most are either small units within very large companies, or they're family-owned or privately-held companies. Only one is publicly held, and lately that's been a problem for them.
