Service Contract Pricing: Dryers:

The average dryer extended warranty cost 14% of the appliance price, the same rate we calculated for washing machines. We found dryer service contracts ranging from $18 to $630, from one to eight years in length.

Last week, we shopped for washing machine extended warranties. Naturally, this week we're online shopping for electric dryers, and service contracts to protect them.

We collected data for dryer extended warranties sold by 27 different online retailers, representing 15 different obligors and administrators, and eight different insurance underwriters.

Our sample of dryers represented 12 different appliance manufacturers. The dryer prices ranged from $488 to $2,749, and the drum capacities ranged from 4 to 9 cubic feet. In total, we collected data on 329 different dryer extended warranties, all of which we found for sale online.

We found a breadth of dryer protection plans for sale online, with a wide range of percentage ratios of service contract price to appliance price. At the low end of the spectrum, we found a $40 three-year Wayfair Protection Plans, provided by Allstate, which cost just 1.8% of the $2,199 Bosch dryer it served. At the high end, we found a $290 eight-year Extended Service Protection Plan from P.C. Richard & Son, which cost an amazing 43% of the $670 Amana dryer it protected.

Methodology

We limited our data collection to electric dryers. We did not gather any data on extended warranties for gas dryers, nor did we collect data for all-in-one washer dryers. Since we're focused more on the extended protection plans, rather than the appliances themselves, we did not collect data distinguishing front- and top-loaders, nor did we distinguish between vented and ventless, for the dryers we surveyed.

We let each website's algorithm guide us in our data collection. For each online retailer, we gathered data on the top recommended dryers, along with a representative dryer at the top of the results for the "high to low" and "low to high" price range sorts. We collected data on extended warranties for four to six dryers (unless limited by available stock) from each online retailer, each in a different price range (see Figure 2).

We did not collect any sale prices. For each website, we gathered data on the "original price" of each appliance and service contract.

We gathered data on extended warranties sold by 27 different online appliance retailers, half nationwide U.S. retailers, and half regional retailers selling service contracts in just one or a few U.S. states.

The national retailers were: Amazon, Best Buy, Electrolux, GE Appliances, Home Depot, LG, Lowe's, Maytag, Menards, Samsung, Walmart, Wayfair, and Whirlpool.

The regional retailers were: ABC Warehouse, Abt Electronics, AJ Madison, Big George's Home Appliance Mart, Big Sandy Superstore, BrandsMart USA, Electronic Express, Famous Tate Appliance & Bedding Centers, Jetson TV & Appliance, Nebraska Furniture Mart, Orville's Home Appliances, P.C. Richard & Son, RC Willey, and Warners' Stellian.

For further details on the regions in which these regional appliance retailers are selling extended warranties, take a look at last week's newsletter "Service Contract Pricing: Washing Machines."

Service Contract Administrators

Some of the regional retailers administrate their own in-house extended warranties and repair networks. Others, along with the nationwide online retailers, use more prominent administrators, obligors, and underwriters, the names of which will be familiar to our readers.

The most common group was Allstate, which officially uses administrator SquareTrade, Inc., obligor CE Care Plan Corp, and underwriter Allstate Insurance Company. The online retailers selling Allstate plans were: AJ Madison, Big George's Home Appliance Mart, Famous Tate Appliance & Bedding Centers, Home Depot, Menards, and Nebraska Furniture Mart, Walmart, and Wayfair.

Nebraska Furniture Mart sells SquareTrade branded plans, while the other retailers sell Allstate branded plans. Since Allstate acquired SquareTrade in 2017, branding for "SquareTrade, an Allstate company" has become less common, with many of the SquareTrade-named plans transitioning to Allstate branding instead.

Since August 2025, Best Buy now sells Assurant plans, using obligor and administrator Federal Warranty Service Corp., and underwriter American Bankers Insurance Company of Florida. Lowe's, GE Appliances, and Samsung also sell protection plans from Assurant.

Whirlpool and Maytag sell plans from Domestic & General USA, with administrator and obligor Domestic & General USA Services LLC, and underwriter Technology Insurance Company, Inc.

LG and Amazon both sell extended warranties from Asurion, with administrator Asurion Services, LLC, obligor Asurion Service Plans, Inc., and underwriter Continental Casualty Company.

Electrolux sells Total Appliance Protection plans, which it administrates itself under the names Electrolux Home Products, Inc. and/or Electrolux Warranty Corporation, with obligor OnPoint Warranty Solutions LLC, and underwriter Universal Underwriters Insurance Company.

BrandsMart USA sells plans from administrator ProtectALL USA, LLC, with obligor First Shield Consumer Service Corporation, and underwriter Arch Insurance Company. This is a change from our study last year, when we found BrandsMart selling Allstate plans.

Orville's Home Appliances sells plans from administrator New Leaf Service Contracts, LLC, with obligor 4warranty Corporation, and underwriter Lyndon Southern Insurance Company.

The rest of the regional retailers have their own in-house extended warranty programs.

ABC Warehouse, Abt Electronics, Big Sandy Superstore, Electronic Express, Jetson TV & Appliance, P.C. Richard & Son, RC Willey Home Furnishings, and Warners' Stellian all have homegrown extended warranty programs, with their own repair network of service technicians. Each retailer serves as its own administrator and obligor.

In addition, Electronic Express uses local company Alliance Warranty Solutions as its obligor, and Warners' Stellian uses local company Ironclad Home Services, LLC as its administrator and obligor.

Survey Results

Now that we've taken an overview of the administrator/ obligor/ underwriter teams behind these extended warranties, let's analyze the 329 different electric dryer service contracts for which we gathered data.

Figure 1 shows the brands of the dryers for which we collected data in this survey of online retailers.

Figure 1
Brands of Washing Machines Surveyed

Figure 1

We found the most extended warranties for LG electric dryers, mainly because LG appliances often populated the highest prices on each website.

We also gathered data on electric dryers made by Samsung, Whirlpool, GE, Electrolux, Maytag, and Bosch. Of course, note that Whirlpool has owned Maytag since 2006.

In the "Other" category, we also gathered data on service contracts for dryers manufactured by Midea, Amana, Miele, Hotpoint, and Kenmore.

Figure 2 shows the price ranges of the electric dryers surveyed.

Figure 2
Price of Washing Machines Surveyed

Figure 2

We were able to collect an equal amount of data in just about each price range. The most common price range was $1,500 to $2,000, followed closely by $1,250 to $1,500, and $850 to $1,000.

Figures 3, 4, and 5 show statistics about the extended warranties attached to these washing machines. Figure 3 shows the length of the service contracts we surveyed.

Figure 3
Length of Service Contracts Offered

Figure 3

The most common length of extended protection plan was five years, followed by three years. Two- and four-year service contracts were present, but less common.

One-, seven-, and eight-year plans were uncommon, though we did find them. We did not find any six-year plans available, nor did we find any longer than eight years.

The only online retailer offering seven-year protection plans was Samsung, and the only retailer offering eight-year plans was P.C. Richard & Son.

Figure 4 shows when each service contract began: either the date of purchase/ delivery of the appliance, or when the limited manufacturer's warranty ends (typically after one year).

Figure 4
Service Contract Start Date

Figure 4

It was more common for these appliance protection plans to begin at the date of purchase of the dryer, rather than after the limited warranty ends.

Many of the plans that began after the end of the limited warranty were sold on the online retail websites of the appliance manufacturers. Those plans were: the Domestic & General Protection Plans sold by Whirlpool and Maytag, the Asurion plans sold by LG, and the Assurant plans sold by GE Appliances.

In addition, the Lowe's Protection Plans, provided by Assurant, and the Walmart Protection Plans, provided by Allstate, also began after the end of the manufacturer's warranty.

The Lowe's Protection Plans are also unique in that they cover "normal wear and tear," which we will detail in Figure 5.

Figure 5
Presence of "Normal Wear and Tear" Language

Figure 5

25 of the 329 service contracts for which we gathered data included language covering "normal wear and tear" or "accidents," while the rest of the plans had a more typical scope, covering mechanical defects and failures.

The Lowe's Protection Plans, provided by Assurant, and the Washer & Dryer Protection Plans from Nebraska Furniture Mart, provided by Allstate, both covered normal wear and tear.

Some of the plans, including the Lowe's Protection Plans, also covered preventative maintenance. Certain extended warranties, including those from Lowe's and Big Sandy Superstore, also offer credits towards the purchase of a new appliance or piece of furniture if the service contract is not used during its duration.

We could get even deeper into the terms and conditions, and individual coverages, of each of the service contracts we found. Instead, let's compare the plans to each other, by comparing the protection plan price to the appliance price, as a percentage.

One-and Two-Year Service Contracts

In the following charts, the x-axis is the price of the extended warranty, and the y-axis is the percentage ratio of the plan price to the appliance price. Figure 6 shows these data for the one- and two-year extended warranties for which we collected data.

Figure 6
One- and Two-Year Service Contracts:
Price of Service Contracts Offered
(as a percentage of washer price)

Figure 6

At the low end of range of price pairings, there was a $45 one-year Bodewell Care Protection Plan from GE Appliances, provided by Assurant, which cost 2.9% of the $1,549 electric dryer.

At the high end of the spectrum, there was a $120 two-year Ironclad Product Protection from Warners' Stellian, which cost 17% of the $700 Whirlpool electric dryer.

The average one- or two-year service contract cost 7% of the electric dryer price. In this group, there were 32 plans below average, and 27 plans above average.

The most expensive plan, the outlier to the right of Figure 6, was a $250 two-year Extended Warranty with AWS plan from Electronic Express, which cost 9% of the $2,749 LG electric dryer.

Of the six plans clustered around $150, the one with the highest percentage ratio was a $170 two-year Ironclad Product Protection plan from Warners' Stellian, which cost 12% of the $1,450 Electrolux dryer.

Three-Year Service Contracts

Figure 7 shows the prices of three-year dryer extended warranties as a percentage of the appliance price, compared to the plan prices.

Figure 7
Three-Year Service Contracts:
Price of Service Contracts Offered
(as a percentage of washer price)

Figure 7

The low range of the price pairings was a $40 three-year Wayfair Protection Plan, provided by Allstate, which cost 1.8% of the $2,199 Bosch dryer. The cluster of six data points in the lower left corner of Figure 7 were all Allstate plans from Wayfair.

At the high end of the spectrum was a $150 three-year Samsung Care+ plan, provided by Assurant, and sold on the Samsung website, which cost 26% of the $579 electric dryer.

The average three-year dryer protection plan cost 11% of the total appliance price. Thus, 63 plans were above average, and 44 plans were below average.

The most expensive plan was a $380 three-year Extended Warranty with AWS plan from Electronic Express, which cost 14% of the $2,749 LG dryer. This was the same dryer for which we found the most expensive two-year plan in this survey.

Four-Year Service Contracts

Figure 8 shows the percentage and price pairings for the four-year extended warranties.

Figure 8
Four-Year Service Contracts:
Price of Service Contracts Offered
(as a percentage of washer price)

Figure 8

At the low end of the spectrum, there was a $160 four-year ProtectAll Premium Protection Plan from BrandsMart USA, provided by ProtectALL, which cost 10% of the $1,549 Electrolux dryer.

At the high end, there was a $179 four-year Abt Local Extended Protection Plan from Abt Electronics, which cost 28% of the $649 Amana dryer.

The average four-year extended protection plan cost 15% of the dryer price. Thus, 17 plans were below average, and 13 plans were above average.

Five-, Seven-, and Eight-Year Service Contracts

Finally, Figure 9 shows the plan price and percentage pairings for the five-, seven-, and eight-year protection plans.

Figure 9
Five-, Seven-, and Eight-Year Service Contracts:
Price of Service Contracts Offered
(as a percentage of washer price)

Figure 9

At the low end of the spectrum, there was a $74 five-year Wayfair Protection Plan, provided by Allstate, which cost 3.4% of the $2,199 Bosch dryer. Just as we saw in Figure 7, the cluster of six data points in the lower left corner of Figure 9 were all Wayfair Protection Plans provided by Allstate.

At the high of the range, there was a $290 eight-year Extended Service Protection Plan from P.C. Richard & Son, which cost 43% of the $670 Amana dryer.

The next-highest plan was a $250 seven-year Samsung Care+ plan, which cost 43% of the $579 Samsung dryer.

The average protection plan spanning five years or longer cost 18% of the dryer price. 76 plans were below average, and 57 plans were above average.

The most expensive plan of this whole report was a $630 five-year Extended Warranty with AWS plan from Electronic Express, again for the same $2,749 LG dryer. This plan cost 23% of the appliance price.

Two of the $450 plans were eight-year extended warranties from P.C. Richard & Son. The third $450 plan was a five-year Abt Local Extended Protection Plan from Abt Electronics, which cost 18% of the $2,499 Miele dryer.
