The average washing machine and dryer extended service contract cost 14% of the appliance price, and the average refrigerator extended warranty cost 11% of the appliance price.

In contrast, the average dishwasher extended protection plan cost 16% of the appliance price. This increased cost of extended warranties for smaller appliances highlights a larger trend we've observed in this "Service Contract Pricing" series: extended warranties for less expensive appliances tend to cost a larger percentage of the overall appliance price.

For dishwashers, we extended warranty price pairings ranging from a $46 two-year Wayfair Protection Plan, which cost 1.8% of a $2,529 dishwasher, to a $219 five-year Abt Local Extended Protection Plan, which cost an amazing 58% of the $379 dishwasher it covered. Overall, the service contracts we found ranged in price from $18 for a three-year plan, to $1,098 for a five-year plan.

Methodology

We collected data on 269 different dishwasher extended warranties.

We gathered data only for built-in dishwashers, excluding portable and countertop dishwashers. We did not gather data on any dishwashers intended for commercial use. We did include a few built-in dishwashers labeled as "compact," because they were 18 inches wide rather than the standard 24 inches. However, we did not gather data on any dishwashers labeled as "compact" that were not built-in kitchen appliances.

We collected data on the extended warranty options for four to six dishwashers sold by each retailer, unless limited by the online selection. Each dishwasher was at a different price point (see Figure 2). We did not collect any sale prices, for either the appliance or the extended warranty.

Extended Warranty Online Retailers

We gathered data on refrigerator extended warranties sold by 24 different online retailers, half nationwide U.S. retailers, and half regional retailers selling service contracts in just one or a few U.S. states.

The national retailers were: Amazon, Best Buy, Frigidaire, GE Appliances, Home Depot, KitchenAid, LG, Lowe's, Maytag, Menards, Samsung, Walmart, Wayfair, and Whirlpool.

The regional retailers were: ABC Warehouse [MI], Abt Electronics [IL], Big Sandy Superstore [KY, OH, WV], BrandsMart USA [FL], Electronic Express [TN], Jetson TV & Appliance [FL], Orville's Home Appliances [NY], P.C. Richard & Son [NY], RC Willey [UT, ID, NV], and Warners' Stellian [MN, IA, MO].

Service Contract Administrators, Obligors, and Underwriters

Some of the regional retailers administrate their own in-house extended warranties and repair networks. Others, along with the nationwide online retailers, use more prominent administrators, obligors, and underwriters, the names of which will be familiar to our readers.

In addition to the sample we analyze in this newsletter, there are a plethora of regional appliance retailers selling Allstate protection plans, all with very similar pricing structures. These retailers include AJ Madison, Appliance Village, Big George's Home Appliance Mart, Famous Tate Appliance & Bedding Centers, Gerhard's Appliances, and Nebraska Furniture Mart.

In addition to those regional retailers, Allstate provides protection plans for Home Depot, Menards, Walmart, and Wayfair.

Assurant was the most common extended warranty provider in our data set of dishwasher extended warranties. Best Buy, Lowe's, GE Appliances, and Samsung sell protection plans provided by Assurant.

Best Buy began selling Assurant plans in August 2025, when it switched from selling Geek Squad plans provided by AIG. The previously-issued AIG plans also switched over to Assurant in December 2025.

Whirlpool, Maytag, and KitchenAid sell plans provided by Domestic & General USA.

LG and Amazon both sell extended warranties provided by Asurion.

Frigidaire sells Total Appliance Protection plans, which are administrated by parent company Electrolux, with obligor OnPoint Warranty Solutions LLC, and underwriter Universal Underwriters Insurance Company.

BrandsMart USA sells plans from administrator ProtectALL USA, LLC, with obligor First Shield Consumer Service Corporation, and underwriter Arch Insurance Company. This is a change from our study last year, when we found BrandsMart selling Allstate plans.

Orville's Home Appliances sells plans from administrator New Leaf Service Contracts, LLC, with obligor 4warranty Corporation, and underwriter Lyndon Southern Insurance Company.

The rest of the regional retailers have their own in-house extended warranty programs. ABC Warehouse, Abt Electronics, Big Sandy Superstore, Electronic Express, Jetson TV & Appliance, P.C. Richard & Son, RC Willey Home Furnishings, and Warners' Stellian all have homegrown extended warranty programs, with their own repair network of service technicians. Each retailer serves as its own administrator and obligor.

In addition, Electronic Express uses local company Alliance Warranty Solutions as its obligor, and Warners' Stellian uses local company Ironclad Home Services, LLC as its administrator and obligor.

Survey Results

The following charts summarize the dishwashers for which we gathered data, and the extended warranties available to protect them.

Frigidaire was the most common dishwasher brand for which we gathered data, followed closely by Bosch. We also gathered data on dishwashers made by LG, Whirlpool, GE Appliances, Miele, KitchenAid, and Samsung.

We also gathered fewer than 15 data points for dishwashers made by: Thermador, Amana, Asko, Monogram, Smeg, Zline Kitchen & Bath, Criterion, Black + Decker, Kenmore, Midea, and Sharp.

Figure 2 shows the price ranges of the dishwashers surveyed.

The most common price range for the dishwashers we surveyed was $500 to $1,000. The majority of the dishwashers cost less than $1,500.

The least expensive dishwasher for which we gathered data cost $379, and the most expensive dishwasher cost $6,101.

Figures 3 and 4 show statistics about the extended warranties attached to these dishwashers. Figure 3 shows the length of the service contracts we surveyed.

The most common dishwasher extended warranty duration was five years, followed closely by three years.

All of the seven-year plans were from Samsung, and the eight-year plans were from P.C. Richard & Son.

Many of the one- and two-year plans start after the manufacturer's warranty (typically one year) expires, while the three-year and longer plans usually begin at the date of purchase. We will further explore the start date of these service contracts in Figure 4.

197, or 73%, of the dishwasher protection plans we surveyed started at the date of purchase, while the remaining 72, or 27%, of the plans started after the expiration of the manufacturer's warranty.

The plans sold by Frigidaire, GE Appliances, KitchenAid, LG, Lowe's, Maytag, and Whirlpool all begin after the manufacturer's warranty expires. With the exception of Lowe's, all of these plans are sold directly by the appliance OEMs on their online retail sites.

One-Year Service Contracts

Now, let's compare the plans to each other, by comparing the protection plan price to the appliance price, as a percentage. In the following charts, the x-axis is the price of the extended warranty, and the y-axis is the percentage ratio of the plan price to the appliance price.

Figure 5 shows these data for the one-year extended warranties.

At the low end of the range of price pairings, we found a $45 one-year Bodewell Care Protection Plan from GE Appliances, provided by Assurant, which cost 3% of the $1,599 dishwasher it protected.

At the high end, we found a $46 one-year Domestic & General Protection Plan from Whirlpool, which cost 12% of the $399 dishwasher price.

All of the one-year protection plans we found started after the manufacturer's warranty expired.

The average one-year dishwasher extended warranty cost 6% of the appliance price. 10 plans were below average, while eight plans were above average.

The most expensive one-year extended warranty cost $90, for a LG Premium Care by Asurion plan, which cost 6% of the $1,499 dishwasher price.

Two-Year Service Contracts

Figure 6 shows the prices of the two-year dishwasher extended warranties, as a percentage of the appliance price, compared to the plan price.

25 of the two-year dishwasher extended warranties started at the date of purchase, while 13 of the plans started once the manufacturer's warranty expired.

At the low end of the price pairings, we found an $80 two-year Extended Warranty Protection plan from Jetson TV & Appliance, which cost 2% of the $3,299 dishwasher price.

At the high end, we found a $100 Ironclad Product Protection plan from Warners' Stellian, which cost 20% of the $500 appliance price.

The average two-year dishwasher extended warranty cost 10% of the appliance price. Thus, 21 plans were below average, and 17 plans were above average.

The most expensive two-year dishwasher service contract cost $400, for an Extended Warranty with AWS plan from Electronic Express, which cost 10% of the $4,099 dishwasher it protects.

Three-Year Service Contracts

Figure 7 shows the prices of three-year dishwasher extended warranties as a percentage of the appliance price, compared to the protection plan price.

The plans ranged from a $46 three-year Wayfair Protection Plan, provided by Allstate, which cost 2% of the dishwasher price, up to a $200 three-year Samsung Care+ plan, provided by Assurant, which cost 31% of the $649 appliance price.

The average dishwasher extended warranty cost 13% of the appliance price. 45 plans were below average, and 44 plans were above average.

The most expensive three-year dishwasher service contract cost $600, for an Extended Warranty with AWS plan from Electronic Express, which cost 15% of the $4,099 dishwasher.

Four-Year Service Contracts

Figure 8 shows the price pairings for the four-year dishwasher extended warranties

At the low end of the spectrum, we found a $180 three-year Bodewell Care Protection Plan from GE Appliances, which cost 11% of the $1,599 dishwasher.

At the high side, we found a $179 three-year Abt Local Extended Protection Plan from Abt Electronics, which cost 47%, nearly half, of the $379 dishwasher.

The average four-year dishwasher extended warranty cost 20% of the appliance price. Thus, 17 plans were below average, and seven plans were above average.

The most expensive four-year dishwasher extended warranty cost $800, and again covered the same $4,099 Asko dishwasher from Electronic Express. The four-year plan cost 20% of the appliance price.

Five-Year Service Contracts

Figure 9 shows the price pairings for the five-year dishwasher protection plans.

At the low side of the five-year dishwasher extended warranties, we found an $87 Wayfair Protection Plan, provided by Allstate, which cost 3% of the $2,529 dishwasher price.

At the high end of the price pairings, we found a $219 three-year Abt Local Extended Protection Plan from Abt Electronics, which cost 58%, more than half, of the $379 dishwasher price.

The average dishwasher extended warranty cost 20% of the appliance price. 52 plans were below average, and 38 plans were above average.

The most expensive five-year dishwasher extended warranty cost $1,098, for a Abt Local Extended Protection Plan, which cost 18% of the appliance price.

Seven- & Eight-Year Service Contracts

Finally, Figure 10 shows the price pairings for the few seven- and eight-year dishwasher service contracts.

At the low end, we found a $530 eight-year Extended Service Protection Plan from P.C. Richard & Son, which cost 15% of the $3,500 dishwasher price.

At the high end, we found a $350 seven-year Samsung Care+ plan, which cost 54% of the $649 dishwasher price.

The average seven- or eight-year dishwasher extended warranty cost 35% of the appliance price. Four plans were below average, and six plans were above average.
